The Explorers are taught most of the same skills that probationary firefighters learn while going through their training.  The classes consist of lectures on the use of different tools, equipment, and scenarios in the fire service.  These lectures are followed by a Hands-On exercise where the Explorers can put their newly learned skills to work.  The final pay-off after going through the training is a mock 13-35.  In this FINAL REVIEW, the explorers themselves will become the officers and firefighters.  Using our District building Explorer officers will lead, as the remaining explorers do the FIREFIGHTER WORK.  All aspects of the class will come into play here.  Everything from venting, search teams, fighting the (mock) fire, requesting mutual aid, to Rapid Intervention Team request.  After completeing the fire training, there will be approximately 2 months of basic rescue training.  The Explorers will be taught basic first aid (not certified) and be put into scenarios where their learned skills are needed.  They will learn Limb and Spine stabilization, Bleeding control, how to treat shock, CPR (not certified) and how to use the AED (not certified). During the training we hope to be able to work with some members of the Heavy Rescue company to give our Explorers and insight into what would go on around them in a Motor Vehicle Accident with Heavy Rescue.  The Final pay-off to the rescue training is a Mock MCI, (Mass Casualty Incident) where the explorers take the role of rescuer, assess the situation, and provide care.  As a member of the department an "observer" who is neither an EMT or a Driver becomes a helper to the EMT.  Our goal is to give the Explorers enough confidence and knowledge to be a competent set of hands on the ambulance if they do plan on joining the department.  As a result of all this training we hope that when they become 18 yrs old and are interested in joining the department that between the Fire and Rescue training, their knowledge will be an asset.

Explorers are accepted in throughout the year.  Please check with one of the above listed advisors to find out about openings.  Since Explorers come in year round some explorers will be more advanced than others.  This is where our Explorer officers step up to the challenge and help their fellow explorers.

For persons age 14-17 interested in being part of the Ronkonkoma Fire department:

Interested in one day becoming a firefighter? Want to learn more about fire fighting and fire prevention, or are you interested in receiving a college scholarship? If so we offer a Junior firefighter program (explorers).  The explorers meet on Wednesday nights from 7:00-8:30.   At these meetings they learn about fire, use actual firefighting equipment, and learn about the EMS program. They are taught by our own volunteer firemen and EMS.  Explorers also March in parades, and help at fund raisers, and during fire prevention week.  If you are interested in this program call or come down to the firehouse on wednesdays at 7pm and ask to speak to an explorer Advisor
